Here at Philippine Outsourcing.com I spend thousands of dollars every month testing different tools, training programs and systems. We have many different tools for our outsourcing services and some of them do the same thing. So I asked myself – If I only did this for me – What tools I would consider to be “must have”. As it turns out there are six.

One is a single payment and the other five are unfortunately subscriptions.

ONE: Market Samurai – This tool is one of the three best buys in Internet marketing. It will do very fast keyword research and take 34 hours of competition analysis and bring it down to ten minutes. If you buy during the trial you can bag this baby for $97

TWO: We have been shown that a website is 50 times more likely to appear on the first page of search engine results if it has video. While video can be created very quickly the distribution is another story. The current premier tool for video distribution is Traffic Geyser. Not cheap as monthly subscriptions go but you can get your foot in the door at $97 a month. TG currently offers a 21 day trial for $1

THREE: Creating articles is time consuming. To get the most from an article you need to spin it. I have looked at just about every spinning tool available. None has come close to The Best Spinner – This jewel was created by Jonathan Leger. He updates this tool constantly. Currently this tool is available for $77 a year. I would rate this as the third best value in Internet marketing.

FOUR: Article marketing has been and will remain the single best long term strategy for making a living online. One service called unique article wizard will take three versions of an article and swap paragraphs. It then distributes them to article directories and hungry blog owners. This gives the owners of the articles much desired links. Currently this service is $67 a month.

FIVE: When it comes to off page optimization there are a number of tools that will do article submissions, create link wheels, book marking, some video submission, account creation etc. The best known of these is Senuke. The old version is impressive and a new version is on the horizon. Currently $127 a month.

SIX: Finally, Wouldn’t it be nice to have a network of people with real blogs who want your content and will leave your links intact. For a service like this to be useful the blogs need to be privately owned and privately controlled. They should be geographically diverse. There are not many services who can meet these requirements. We use Rapid Free Traffic. I average one new link per article per day. (Take note: this is using a well spun article) Monthly cost – $67

So what is the cost to effectively be in the Internet Marketing business: $364.41

Why not hire someone to do all of this for you who has all of these tools available and so much more. @ $397 per month this is a net cost of $32.59 a month for a full time worker.

A different way to evaluate outsourcing services

I have worked with computers both hardware and software for about 30 years now. I think it was in the eighties that I first heard the term “Total Cost of Ownership” or “TCO”. The purpose of this measurement is to be able to plan effectively and make wise purchase decisions. It allows you to make apple to apple comparisons. I believe I can demonstrate how this methodology can be applied to Internet marketing Outsourcing.

While you do not actually “own” the outsource worker you do own the relationship. And there is a cost of ownership in that relationship. To illustrate this point lets look at the direct costs and the somewhat hidden or obscured costs.

We can begin with salary. Whatever the number is it is fairly fixed. The only variations that come into play depend on your policies regarding sick time, family emergencies, holidays and vacations. Once these policies are in place the costs are very predictable.

After this the lines get a little blurry. Remember why you outsource to begin with. Ideally it is for a combination of four reasons. 1. The person is taking care of tasks that you do not want to do. 2. This gives you more time for higher levels of work or higher priorities in your life. 3. The individual adds to your expertise. 4. This work is done at a net savings to you.

The reality behind this can be very different. Let’s say that you find and hire someone from one of the many job boards that have popped up in the last few years. How much training will that person require? If this person is an untrained and inexperienced independent contractor you basically have two choices. You can use your time to create video training and pass them to the resource, and then hope they learn the material. The problem with this approach is that you just lost the 2nd intended benefit – time. The other option is to purchase training materials for the individual. This of course comes at a financial price to you and reducing the fourth benefit. And until this person has become a task master at what you want them to do you have also lost the 1st benefit.

With outsource workers there is an infrastructure cost. Who will pay to fix their computer or get the virus removed or bears the cost of a fast internet connection? With an independent resource it is you directly or indirectly. In the event of a PC failure – even if you do not pay the repair charges you will be losing valuable time while the resource tries to put the money together to have it repaired. If the internet connection is slow it is your productivity levels that suffer.

Tools: With them your resource may be a star. Without them….. who knows. So which tools do you buy? And in buying them for the resource do you lose the use of them for you? Once again there are tradeoffs. Better tools – faster work – greater productivity but at a cost. And that cost can be significant.

And while I would prefer to not bring it up there is another consideration – fraud. There is a temptation for the Internet Marketing Outsource worker to take on multiple clients. This may be ok in some circumstances. However, it is never ok when you have agreed that the resource will work for you full time. No worker can reasonably serve two masters at 100 percent capacity full time for more than a day or two.

There is a solution; Hire from an agency that provides supervision, training, infrastructure support and a complete set of tools to do the job. While many agencies provide some of these benefits as a standard package or on an ala carte basis, find that provides all of these benefits as part of the standard package.

There are those agencies that will give you a flat price for the resource, but the minute your resource begins using specific software tools, you get charged for those tools.

When you consider the amount of software programs that Internet Marketers use, what started out as a good price can quickly turn into a hefty sum of money. Suddenly you’re looking at a losing proposition. When you are outsourcing, it has to be a Win/Win, no other way works.

Incidentally, my company gives you a flat fee for your resource, and this includes the use of productivity software. My team is well versed in all different types of marketing software, you can check out what we offer by going to our home page at www.PhilippineOutsourcing.com.

I am perplexed at the stories I hear in the outsourcing industry where a customer gets hit with his first bill and it wasn’t what they expected at all. Do your homework up front and avoid unnecessary surprises.

Outsourcing comes in two flavors:

1. Managed

2. Un-managed

It’s important to understand what each category of outsourcing brings to the table.

Managed Outsourcing

Managed outsourcing, such as the one my company offers, will have a central office and provide supervision to your resource. Let’s differentiate between the two so you can understand them better.

With managed outsourcing you reap a number of benefits which include the following:

Accountability – Managed resources are held accountable as they are part of a team. They are judged on their ability to provide work-flow for the customer.

Supervision – Office supervising takes place with a managed resource as they have a definitive work time and place. They report to a supervisor at the start of work and leave after having put in a full day.

Support – The managed resource is supported by a supervisor and other subject matter experts. A good example of this is our team is involved immediately on new strategic tools, such as the Google Cash Detective. If a technical question arises for your resource on a very new tool, we’ve got it covered.

Infrastructure – Managed resources come with the business infrastructure that you’d expect from a reputable company. Phones, flavor of the day computers with necessary CPU power and RAM, good office space…

Resource replacement – With a managed outsourcing company, should your resource leave for any reason, they are replaced immediately with another resource just as qualified. The huge benefit of resource replacement needs no further emphasis.

Un-managed Outsourcing

Although un-managed resourcing can work, it is extremely hit-or-miss and leaves a web marketer vulnerable in several specific areas.

No supervision – One of the main issues with un-managed outsourcing is your resource is not held accountable to an immediate supervisor. If a resource is half a world away it takes time to determine what the issue is. We all want to believe in the best of people so we turn to the most likely problem (The resource themselves) last.

Problem resolution – With an un-managed resource, there can be times when a problem is left unnoticed for days or even weeks. This is critical time lost to your business and bottom line. Sometimes this is cultural but needs to be addressed.

Lack of infrastructure support – Un-managed resources must resolve all of their own problems. Chances are they do not have redundant internet connections. If a PC breaks they must get it repaired themselves. (Do they have the finances to take care of immediate problems immediately or will the problem languish for a few days until you question it.)

Must be a unique resource – An un-managed resource that delivers must be very unique and many times overly-qualified. The ability to work from home in a disciplined fashion does not come naturally to most of us, yet we expect that from an un-managed resource.

Potential for fraud is far greater – I am hearing an increase in the number of reports of outsourcers taking on multiple full time clients.

Do not misunderstand. If you have experience in outsourcing and managing people the un-managed situation can work. The question is – Why are you choosing this option? It is not necessarily cheaper even when it does work.

Going through an agency does not guarantee that you are getting a managed resource. Most agencies operate similar to the head hunter model in the U.S. They gather applicants and turn them loose with clients. To determine if the company is offering a managed resource solution, ask the following questions:

1. Does the resource report to an office controlled by the company?

2. How many fellow employees work in that office?

3. How many times each day will the resource have direct in-person contact with the supervisor?

Honest answers to these questions will quickly identify the status of the relationship.

The next question to ask is what is included in the way of marketing tools, subscriptions, software etc.

Those who are successful in the world of Search Engine Optimization (SEO) and Internet Marketing (IM) are those who have learned to apply automation techniques to their successful strategy. Without automation, you will be too slow in this Internet world of ‘get it done fast’ and will never build up enough of a base to turn a profit.

Automation comes in many different facets. Initially marketers can become successful with a strategy of website building that includes several automation tools such as Caffeinated Content, Bookmarking Demon…and a number of other tools out on the market.

But what eventually happens is that a marketer hits his or her production ceiling with these automation techniques. This happens, particularly in blog automation, because there are still a number of manual tasks that need to be performed, such as the running of the automation software. And these manual tasks take time. The more tools you run, the longer it can take.

The logical next step for a marketer who has reached this success plateau is obtaining another person that they can show how to duplicate their formula. You can get a business partner, but this doesn’t work because it will cut your profit to probably half of what it currently is.

This is where outsourcing comes in.

Managed effectively, from the selection of your resource to resource management, your increased work output will result in your profits increasing exponentially.

The next step is where to outsource. Outsourcing in the States or the EU, forget it! The profit margin from monetized blogs is not high enough. You need to find an outsourcing resource which provides the technical aspect and affordability.

GE can outsource to India and IBM can outsource to Costa Rica because their profit margins allow them to afford those rates. That allows them to work smart.

But internet marketers also need to work smart or they will fail. Currently the Philippines are an internet marketer’s haven for obtaining a resource. The Philippines provides the following:

Competitive rates for Internet Marketers

English speaking workers

Technically capable resources

But, you need to understand the Philippines and currency rates. Keep in mind that a resource from Manila or Quezon City can cost double or almost triple what a resource can cost in Iligan City where my base of operation is. It’s very important to understand this when you are gathering quotes. Different areas of the Philippines can contain vastly different economic zones.

The other benefits of resourcing, besides the obvious profit potential, are:

1. Freeing up your time

2. The ability to scale your business

Freeing up your time pays big dividends. This allows you to spend more time on concentrating on the creative side of your business and paying attention to market trends. Let’s face it, the first time you use an automation tool is really cool. You probably paid short money for a tool that produces an enormous amount of work, or you may have downloaded a free plug-in. But after running that tool for the hundredth or thousandth time, it becomes mundane. If it’s mundane, it’s a much better use of a good resources time.

Scaling your business goes hand in hand with profit potential, and it allows you to spend time managing the business, rather than doing that repetitive work. There is no substitute for the potential of your internet marketing business than a solid outsourcing plan.

Day in and day out I spend time with Internet marketers consulting, listening to their successes, and also listening to what’s not working for them and offering direction on what they can do to improve. Many marketers consider jumping into to the arena of outsourcing for a number of different reasons. One of the big reasons is that the heavy-hitters or guru’s say they should do it.

Most marketers who jump in for this reason are doomed to failure from the outset. In order to use an outsourced resource effective, you must be able to answer yes to all three of these questions:

1. Do I know how to discover or create markets?

2. Can I translate the discovery of those markets to a website and use SEO to present those markets to prospective customers?

3. Can I create a straight-forward formula or system from my successful marketing that a resource can easily apply so I can start duplicating my efforts?

If you can’t answer a resounding ‘Yes’ to all three of those questions, you are not ready to take on a resource. You will be wasting your money.

If you can answer yes, then you are ready for outsourcing. But you don’t just grab a resource, and your profits start to double. You are now taking on the role of project manager, and this handbook can help you in your efforts.

As a business owner who supplies technical resources to those internet marketers who need IM work done, and lots of it, I have become privy to the pitfalls, mistakes, misinformation and lack of understanding on how to manage a long distance resource.

Do you have a system that works and is creating revenue for you? Even if your system allows each blog to put a few dollars in your pocket at the end of the month, it’s creating a profit.

Simply put, you can afford outsourcing if you have proof of concept in a system that will create more revenue than the cost of the resource. In this manner you know you have a scalable model that will increase your profits with each resource.

This is very important: Outsourcing is an extension of you. If your finances are not in order then outsourcing is not your answer. If you need to make a profit by a specific date or make a choice between paying for outsourcing or another bill, do not outsource. Instead, build at a pace you can afford until the fruits of your labor will cover your outsourcing.
